George
Scotland International Football Head Coach - 23rd January 2008 1956: Born 3rd June in Cumnock, Ayrshire. Full name, George Elder Burley. Playing Position: Right Back 1973: George starts his playing career at Ipswich Town and makes 500 appearances, scoring 6 goals. He also won a Fa Cup Winners medal in 1978. 1985: George moves to Sunderlandand, makes 54 appearances. 1988: Georges moves on to Gillingham and makes 46 appearances, scoring 2 goals. 1989: George comes North to sign for Motherwell, making 54 appearances. 1991: George starts his managerial career when appointed player manager of Ayr United. George made 67 appearances in his short spell with The Honest Men as player coach. 1993: George leaves the Ayrshire club and signs for Falkirk as a player but makes only one appearance for the Bairns before leaving to rejoin Motherwell. As a player George made only 5 appearances for The Steelmen and was once again on his way. 1994: George is appointed player manager of Colchester United. He turned out 7 appearances for the U's but things were to change big time for George. 1994: George is appointed Head Coach of the club where it all started as Ipswich Town make him an offer he cant refuse. George had 8 years at the helm and in that time he took Ipswich to 3 play off's before finaly winning promotion to the Premier League. Gorges first year in the top flight went very well as he guided Ipswich to 5th place and with that came a Uefa Cup place. Winning gets George noticed and the FA awarded him Manager of the Year 2000 - 2001. As is fate though, they were relegated the following season, and struggle to finish at the foot of Football League Division 1. His contract is terminated by mutual consent in 2002 and George is on his way yet again. 2003: George takes over as interim manager of First Division Derby County and does well enough to be appointed full time coach. Working with very little funds George gets the best out of his squad and they all work hard together and get to the play off semi finals. Some discontent in the Derby camp see's George hang up the boots and resign as Manager in June 2005. 2005: Welcome back to Scotland. George is appointed head coach of Premier club Heart of Midlothian by Lithuanian Vladimir Romanov and the scot immediatley took the SPL by storm. Hearts went on a run of 10 games without defeat, topping the Scottish Premier. Unrest at Tyncastle due to circumstances that i think we all know between Romanov and Burley came to a head when George walked out the door before christmas. The descision was publicised as being of mutual consent. 2005: George is appointed as head coach of Southampton, repalcing Harry Redknapp. Goerges title changes to Manager in 2006 following changes in control at The Saints. A good season 2006 - 2007 as George guides his side to the play off stages only to lose by penalties in the Semi Final against Derby County. 2008: January 23rd, The Scottish Fooball Association reveal that George is their choice to take control of The International Football Team. The SFA will now have talks with the Southampton board of officials. George Started his International career in 1979 and went on to win 11 caps

26th March 2006: George Burley's first game in charge of the International football team is against 7th placed ranking Croatia at a rain soaked Hampden Park Stadium, Glasgow. The boys are hit by an early Croatia goal that puts the pressure on George. Scotland dont lie down and roll over as expected, but fight back and they are rewarded later in the first half as Kenny Miller took on the Croatia defence and stuck away a lovelly goal to equal the score. No more goals were scored in this hard fought friendly which was contested to the full, which can be reflected by the number of bookings in the match. George was satisfied that his players had fought for the cause and who could deny him that after the call off's he had to deal with. A one all draw against a 7th placed Fifa International team should be regarded as a great result and another step forward in the building of our National football team.
